Background And Scope Of The Challenge

Threats such as IED’s (Improvised Explosive Device)and weapons used by terrorists or criminals in public zones create a significant threat to civilian safety and property assets.

Such threats are found in airports, railway terminals and seaports, land border crossings points, entrances to malls and shopping centers, sport and music events, halls and public cultural complexes, and many other locations.

The challenges of real-time accurate and reliable detection and identification of threats while allowing regular life are immense. Specifically, because such threats are constantly changing in material composition, packages formats, etc.

These changes require constant updating and improvement of current technology and development of new systems and technologies.

The Homeland Security Center (in full: the Homeland Threats Detection and Identification Center for Homeland Security) – This ISORAD state-of-the-art operational/technological center specializes in technologies, simulations, testing methods, applications for detecting and identifying hazardous/explosive materials and weaponry carried on the human body, in baggage, vehicles, and commercial cargo.

ISORAD Homeland Security Center cooperates scientifically and technologically with SOREQ Nuclear Center researchers dealing with diagnostic and sensing methods in the fields of chemistry, physics, electro-optics, and more.

ISORAD Homeland Security Center actually serves as an independent and “authoritative unit” for examining the capabilities of detection technologies and systems as well as upgrading and improving them with advanced technologies such as AI, ML and others for improving the detection and classification of such systems against newly developed threat types and challenges.

The center boasts experienced and professional personnel, a broad laboratory infrastructure, dedicated equipment, dedicated and continually updated threats database and the ability to conduct experiments in the laboratory or in field testing outdoors.

Areas of activity and expertise of the center

Performing “real life” scenarios (live threats or simulants), testing and evaluation of threat detection technologies and systems as an independent laboratory to map detection capabilities and false alarms
Technical and scientific support for developers of homeland security detection technologies
Constant data collection regarding any threat to include evolving new threats (material and substance-wise, concealing methods, etc).
R&D and benchmarking for remotely controlled automated non-disclosed detection and monitoring systems
Conducting tests and performance evaluations in the laboratory and in the field.
Development of “best practice” methods for deploying and using detection technology/systems while optimizing capabilities and operational needs
